Caught on CCTV Magpie Vandalises Pavement

 Magpies Vandalise Pavement

Soil and debris on pavement after being vandalised
What a mess! Vandalised pavement

What do they get out of it? We ask when we see wanton vandalism that spoils the area in which we live. Blame the parents for not keeping delinquent children under control. Soft mortar and soil had been deliberately raked out of the joints between paving slabs, which not only causes an unsightly mess, but may eventually lead to the slabs becoming uneven if water and then frost causes more damage.

Captured on CCTV

A rewind of the CCTV footage should reveal the culprit or culprits, indeed it did - See the photo below

So there we have it, CCTV reveals magpies are the culprits vandalising the pavement. It seems that for the past few mornings at around 7 am, the delinquent birds have been tucking into the grubs and insects contained within the joints, for breakfast. I suppose we could say they are 'Cereal Offenders!'

CCTV And AI

CCTV has certainly come a long way since the days when the images were captured on VHS. Now we have HD cameras as well as facial recognition and ANPR ( Automatic Number Plate Recognition ) - available with little cost to everyone. The setup here uses Artificial Intelligence to detect people as well as differentiate between types of animal such as these birds.

Without the CCTV footage, we may have looked at every child that went past wondering if they were the villain. Anger has turned to humour and even endearment to the creatures causing the destruction, relieved that it is only a couple of crafty birds looking for a morning snack.
